What is Obstructive Sleep Apnea?
Apnea - Apnea is the cessation of airflow for 10 seconds or more.
During normal sleep, our airway is held open by muscles which control the tongue and soft palate. If these muscles relax, the airway can become narrowed or even completely blocked, preventing normal breathing. This condition is called Obstructive Sleep Apnea.
As a result of Sleep Apnea sufferers may wake either partially or completely up to several hundred times per night, causing severe sleep deprivation and daytime sleepiness. Untreated Sleep Apnea may lead to serious health problems such as high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, road accidents, memory loss and sexual dysfunction.
Your not alone!
Sleep Apnea is the most commonly diagnosed sleep disorder. An estimated 20 million people suffer from Sleep Apnea in the United States.
